Utility Insurance Mailing: Not Endorsed
by City of Baytown
The City of Baytown is advising residents that a notice about utility-line insurance recently mailed to area residences is not from an insurance firm endorsed by the city to offer such coverage. The mailing from HomeServe begins with the heading, “Important Information Regarding Your Water Service Line” and continues to advise the recipient that “our records indicate your property is not covered by water service line coverage from HomeServe.” Neither HomeServe nor its Texas affiliate, AMT Warranty Corp., are contracted with, or endorsed by, the City of Baytown .
The letter notes that homeowners are responsible for maintenance and repair of the water service line from the property line to the home ‘ s foundation. If a break or other problem should occur, the expense of repair falls to the homeowner, as most homeowner insurance policies does not cover such repairs. City officials want to make it clear that the company has not been endorsed by the City Council or City staff, and is not a firm the City works with to make such coverage available to city homeowners.
“It may be a legitimate service but it’s not a company that we are endorsing,” said Patti Jett, Public Affairs Coordinator. “We recommend that our residents perform their own due diligence in checking out any company they consider doing business with, especially when they do not initiate the contact themselves.”
