20019-24590 – On April 27th at 5:23 p.m., officers responded to a report of an accident in the 700 block of South Pruett in which a bicyclist was struck by a vehicle. The initial investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle, a 53 year old Baytown man, was traveling south on South Pruett when he became distracted, causing his vehicle, a 1994 Jeep Cherokee, to veer into the northbound lanes and briefly leave the roadway. The driver attempted to regain control of his vehicle, however the vehicle struck a telephone pole then struck the bicyclist, who was traveling north on South Pruett. The bicyclist, identified as 49 year old William Crowe of Baytown, suffered severe injuries to his lower legs and was flown to Hermann Hospital in Houston to be treated, however the injuries did not appear to be life threatening at the time according to medical personnel. Unfortunately however, once at the hospital Mr. Crowe’s injuries were found to be more extensive and serious in nature which resulted in Mr. Crowe succumbing to his injuries a short time after arriving at the hospital. The driver of the vehicle was cited at the scene for Failure to Maintain a Single Lane, however the investigation continues in light of the tragic death of Mr. Crowe. (Since the case is still under investigation we are not releasing the name of the driver at this time)
