Baytown Police K-9 Officer shoots suspect during traffic stop
******UPDATE 11-29-18 @ 6:45 p.m. ******
On November 28th
, at approximately 11:10 a.m., a Baytown Police K-9 Officer conducted a traffic
stop of a Chevrolet Pick Up in the 7100 block of North State Highway 146 for failing to stop at a
red light. The suspect vehicle pulled into the parking lot of the Pinehurst Food Mart where it
parked next to the fuel pumps. Our officer made contact with the occupants, a female driver and
a male passenger and shortly after asked for a second unit due to smelling the odor of marijuana
coming from the vehicle.
Once the second officer arrived on scene he had the male passenger exit the vehicle while the K-
9 officer asked the female driver to step out of the vehicle. It was at this time the female driver
became uncooperative and refused to exit the vehicle. The K-9 officer instructed the driver in
excess of thirty times to exit vehicle and that she was under arrest however she refused to
comply and became increasingly agitated and defiant.
As the officers continued to order the female to exit the vehicle she placed the vehicle in reverse
and accelerated backwards. In doing so she nearly ran over the male passenger, who was being
detained at the rear of the vehicle, and the two officers. Fearing not only for his own life but also
that of the male passenger and the secondary officer, the K-9 Officer discharged his duty weapon
two times at the suspect, striking her at least once in the upper torso.
The suspect recklessly continued in reverse and ultimately accelerated out of the parking lot and
fled north on State Highway 146, leading officers on a chase that spanned approximately 25
miles at speeds in excess of 60 MPH. The suspect finally came to a stop at a residence on County
Road 443 in Dayton where she was apprehended by officers and subsequently flown to Herman
Hospital to be treated for what are believed to be non-life threating injuries.
The K-9 Officer involved is an eighteen year veteran of the Baytown Police Department and the
secondary officer is a seven year veteran. Neither officer was injured during the incident
however both are currently on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol in incidents
such as these.
The suspect in this case, identified as 24 year old Elizabeth Adams of Splendora, remains
hospitalized due to her injuries. Ms. Adams is currently facing charges of Felony Evading in a
Motor Vehicle; however the investigation is still ongoing and additional charges could come as a
result. The male passenger was released without charges.
