05.07.18 Accident with Fatality Sunday Morning in Baytown

The accident occurred at approximately 2:45 am. One of our patrol officers attempted to stop a car on Hwy 146, however the driver fled at a high rate of speed and took the Garth exit, which is a very short distance from where officers attempted the stop. The officer lost sight of the vehicle for a moment only to find a few minutes later it had left the roadway and crashed. The vehicle caught fire and multiple officers attempted to put the fire out with their fire extinguishers from their patrol cars as they waited for Fire Department to ultimately put the fire out. The driver was found deceased in the vehicle. The identity of the driver is unknown at this time and the ME is working to determine the identity and the exact cause of death of the driver. It is unclear why the driver refused to stop and it appears the driver was the only occupant of the car.  The case is still under investigation.
