Prescription Drug Abuse: A Dose of Reality Town Hall Meeting
The Baytown Police Department is proud to announce we will be partnering with The Southeast
Harris Community Coalition (SEHCCP), a program of Bay Area Council on Drugs and Alcohol
(BACODA) and Lee College as they present Prescription Drug Abuse: A Dose of Reality, a
community town hall meeting.
Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem across the country, particularly the abuse of
opioids, such as hydrocodone or oxycodone. There is a mistaken assumption that prescription
drugs are safer than illicit drugs because they are legally prescribed. Opioids are highly addictive
and it’s easy to develop a tolerance, which means more of the drug is required to cause the
same effects, which can lead to accidental overdose and even death.
On behalf of BACODA, Lee College, The City of Baytown Emergency Medical Services and The
Baytown Police Department, we would like to invite our media partners and our community
members to join us for this Town Hall Meeting on April 18th. The event is free and open to the
public; there will be an opening reception from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with the Town Hall to run
from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The event is being held in the Rundell Hall Conference Center at Lee
College in Baytown, located at 200 Lee Drive. The event will include several guest speakers and
culminate with an expert panel discussion to answer any questions the audience may have. Our
hope is not only to bring attention to this growing epidemic but also to educate the public on
how they can help fight it and provide them with resources should they find themselves or a
loved one already in the fight against addiction.
Statement from Lt. Steve Dorris/BPD: The case involving the stolen U-Haul was handled by Deer Park PD. However it was reported stolen out of our city on April 10th after the person who rented it back in January failed to return it. U-Haul took all the appropriate actions of sending a certified demand letter requesting the vehicle be returned however the renter never responded to the certified letter and based on that failure to respond, U-Haul contacted us yesterday afternoon to report the vehicle stolen. Our officer was planning on filing auto theft charges today on the person who rented it, 50 year old Marcie Stroud of LaPorte, however as you know Deer Park stopped the vehicle last night.
Also, On Sunday, April 15, 2018, a Baytown police assisted in a police pursuit that initiated in Dayton, TX. The pursuit culminated on Sheldon Road in Channelview. No other details are available.
