11.25.17 Suspect Fled in Vehicle and Died in Crash (New Update 11.28)

Newest Update: The fleeing driver has been identified as 38 year old Terry Tellus of Crosby. During the course of the investigation it was learned that just prior to officers attempting to stop him, Mr. Tellus had been involved in a theft at Wal Mart on Garth Road. This was not known to the officer at the time of the attempted traffic stop, it was learned after the fact, however it offers some explanation as to why he failed to stop. Several items believed to have been taken in the theft were found in the vehicle and concealed on his person.

Chase ends in fatality accident on Garth Road
On November 25th at approximately 1:48 a.m., one of our
marked patrol units attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a gray
2007 Saturn 4 door passenger car in the 6800 block of Garth
Road for traffic violations.
The suspect vehicle initially pulled into a parking lot as if it was
going to comply; however the vehicle refused to stop and instead
exited the parking lot, back onto Garth Road where it continued
north bound at a high rate of speed. Officers followed behind the
vehicle with their emergency equipment activated in an attempt
to get the vehicle to pull over, to no avail.
The vehicle continued north on Garth, disregarding the patrol
vehicles behind it and traveled approximately three miles where
it came to the intersection of Garth Road and FM 1942. The
suspect vehicle, still traveling at a high rate of speed, was unable
to navigate the exchange at this intersection and continued north
through the intersection resulting in the suspect vehicle crashing
on FM 1942.
As officers began investigating the crash they found the driver,
and sole occupant of the vehicle, a black male, was deceased
inside the vehicle. Police are still working to determine the
identity of the driver and if he was in fact the owner of the
vehicle.
Baytown Police Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating
the accident, which is still under investigation. At this time the
reason the driver refused to stop and whether alcohol played a
role in the incident are unknown.
