Sheriff Brian C. Hawthorne reports that today at approximately 3:00 a.m. Chambers County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 900 block of Fifth street in Winnie, TX. in regard to a robbery in progress. Upon arrival deputies discovered Robert Leger Jr. b/m age 33, of Beaumont,
with a gunshot wound and in grave condition. Leger was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont and pronounced dead on arrival. During the investigation detectives discovered DeMarcus Wilson, b/m age 24 also of Beaumont, approximately 200 feet across the street, behind a fence, deceased from a gunshot wound. Upon further investigation, detectives learned there were three occupants of the home asleep when Leger, Wilson and an unknown black male forcibly entered the residence, displaying firearms. One of the occupants living at the residence retrieved a gun and fired multiple times in the direction of the intruders, striking Wilson and Leger. Wilson and the unknown intruder fled the residence on foot after shots were fired.
The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the Texas Rangers.
