At 11:42 a.m. on Monday, May 4, 2015, an adult male parked his white SUV on the southbound shoulder of the Fred Hartman Bridge before climbing over the rail where he was seen by passing motorists. The man was poised to jump but hesitated. This portion of the bridge is in the jurisdiction of Precinct 8 Constable’s Office. Our Department assisted Precinct 8 Constable’s Office by providing traffic control and negotiators. The southbound lanes of State Highway 146 were diverted to Spur 330 while negotiations took place. After approximately two and one half hours of negotiations, the man climbed back over to the safe side at 2:15 p.m. and was taken to a hospital for psychiatric treatment.
